Why Judo Is a Great Sport for Kids
Judo for kids is more than learning how to throw an opponent. It teaches children how to move safely, work with a partner, stay calm under pressure and continue trying when something is difficult.
Unlike activities where children practise alone, judo requires cooperation. Every child learns to be both the person practising a technique and the partner helping someone else learn. This helps develop respect, responsibility and awareness of others.
Kids judo training also develops balance, coordination, agility and body control. As children improve, they gain confidence from real progress rather than praise alone.
Benefits of Judo for Children
- Confidence through achievable progress
- Discipline and better listening habits
- Balance, coordination and general fitness
- Respect for coaches and training partners
- Resilience after mistakes and setbacks
- Problem-solving under pressure
What Age Can Children Start Judo?
Children can start judo from around five years old at Hirose Judo Academy. The best class depends on the child’s age, confidence, concentration and previous experience.
Little Monsters
A shorter class for young beginners. Children learn basic movement, safe falling, simple judo skills and class routines through age-appropriate activities.
Junior Judo
Suitable for school-age children who are ready for a longer class. Beginners learn strong fundamentals while experienced students continue developing.
Is Your Child New to Judo?
Most children who join Hirose Judo Academy start with little or no previous judo experience. We do not expect beginners to already be athletic, confident or ready to compete.
Our beginner kids judo classes introduce each skill step by step. Children first learn movement, balance and safe falling before progressing to throwing and more advanced partner work.

- Safe falling taught before throwing
- Age-appropriate instruction
- Supportive learning environment
- Competition is optional
- Free trial available

Can Parents Watch?
Yes. Parents are welcome to watch and see how the class is run.
Does My Child Have to Compete?
No. Many children train for confidence, fitness, discipline, friendship and enjoyment. Competition is available for those who want it.
How We Make Kids Judo Safer
- Safe falling skills taught from the beginning
- Controlled partner practice
- Techniques matched to age and experience
- Clear class rules and supervision
- Progression before harder training
- Emphasis on control, not force
Is Judo Safe for Kids?
Safety is one of the most important parts of children’s judo training. Beginners do not start by being thrown repeatedly. They first learn how to move, protect themselves and fall safely.
Children practise with partners in a controlled way and learn to use technique, balance and timing rather than uncontrolled strength. Training intensity is adjusted to the child’s age, experience and confidence.
As with any physical sport, minor bumps can happen, but structured coaching, safe progression and correct fundamentals help reduce unnecessary risk.
